Post a Comment. Physical interface configuration.Basf partners
Physical switch interface configuration is a basic operation with any switch device. DELL Force10 switch is no exception. However, one thing is very unique on Force10 switches. Everything, including physical interfaces, on Force10 switch, is disabled by default, therefore, interfaces are in downstate and must be configured before any use.Download muzo aka alphonso chafibemba
Someones are saying it is strange behavior but in my opinion, that's pretty good behavior because it is a much more secure approach. You will not disrupt the whole network by connecting and cabling new switch into your enterprise network until you configure something. If you will do bad configuration than it is your fault and not device fault. Ok, so when you want to use some switch interface you have to enable interface explicitly. Before that, you should be absolutely sure your new Force10 switch is ready to be connected to the network.
Think for example about spanning tree protocol configuration. Let's assume you know what you do and you want to enable the particular physical interface. It is easy. I think the example below is self-explanatory. So your interface is up but another important note is that all physical interfaces are Layer 3 by default. You can assign IP address to Layer 3 routed interface and your L3 switch is configured as a router device.
IP address assignment is shown below.

Cool, but there is a chance you want configure Layer 2 interface to work as a switch port and not routed port. It is pretty easy, you have to tell it to your interface to not have IP address and behave as a switch port. Physical Interface Numbering.Consulting my notes, I found nothing of real value when it comes to a logical progression of setting this device up.
Can anyone point me to a list or jot down the order to set up a switch? I can look up HOW to do all that. I am looking to turn the list around into standard documentation for myself so when I order my next several switches next year and the year afterI have a complete list of do this, then do this, then do this to get the switch prepared. I look to repost my final results as a How-To for everyone generic. Thank you in advance.

These are the settings you will need to use on the newer firmware. On firmware 6. I could not see any reason for this, the logs on the RADIUS server end showed that the authentication was successful but the switch decided to reject the login. Switch Configuration These configuration settings are all set on the switch.
Generic These steps should work on most Dell devices but the steps are slightly different for the latest N series firmware release. This option is NOT required but I do recommend setting it so that in the case of multiple IP's on the switch you are sure where the requests will be sourced from. This is recommended so that you can still access the switch using a local account on the switch should the RADIUS server not be reachable. I recommend opening a new administritive connection to the switch don't log out of your current session for testing.
Save the configuration. If you cannot login, I would suggest reloading the switch stack due to the issues I have encountered. For the purposes of this post, the stack was created using 2 Dell Nseries F 10G switches. There is just a small amount of configuration that needs to be done to configure stacking. This includes the physical cabling stacking cables that need installed as well as telling the switches which ports will be used for stacking purposes.

First things first, you need to install your stacking cables. In the setup I mentioned I was working with, it was a simple 2 switch configuration. A good resource for the N series and others can be found here in the stacking guide.Image augmentation opencv
After configuring the physical stacking cables, you can see the possible stack port options by issuing the following command:. It will show your potential stack ports.

So we need to change this so the switches know we are wanting to designate the ports as stacking ports instead of Ethernet. After copying the configuration, pull power from both switches and then power up the one you want to be the master. After it is fully booted, you can then boot up the standby switch. On power up they should be designated accordingly.
Master Yoda — how is master switch selected? Other than the boot order, how is the master switch determined if all else is equal? The switch is currently the Master. The switch has the higher MAC address. A unit is selected as standby by the administrator, and a fail over action is manually initiated or occurs due to a Master unit failure.
The process to configure configure Dell Nseries switch stack is very painless with the Nseries switches. The main thing is attention to detail and making sure your cabling is correct, designating the stack ports, saving your configuration, then powering up the switches in the order you want them to be designated. Find out which Data Center Switch is right for you.Its working now but for a minor detail:. All my PCs are on VLAN2, and most of the ports are on vlan2, but to get the trunk to work i had to route vlan1 and now the in the other building has vlan1 up with an ip and i cannot get to itbut refuses to bring up its IP on vlan What I didn't see was a declaration that the VLANs on the inter-switch connect are all tagged in your example.
Here are the lines from my link interface:. I can get to where I need to get with them. I don't use a Trunk because a single connection doesn't need to be trunked.
However, I would expect the commands to be the same regardless. A Trunk should like just like a normal interface as far as these commands. The tagged at the end of the lines may be not needed due to defaults don't know but I prefer to be explicit. Dell could not get the interface to work under mode general First, the basic assumptions: you have a current firmware on both units and you have tired bouncing them after hours to make sure there was not any left over config strangeness going on.
Trunk — The port belongs to VLANs on which all ports are tagged except for one port that can be untagged.
So Trunk is a kind of shortcut, forcing tagged only, that is good. However, it appears that both units are not acting the same. One could be acting untagged which would be a problem. Truthfully, if general does not work then I would consider hitting them with a RMA. I believe they have lifetime parts on their units. A device on VLAN 2 with a address in the correct subnet should reach either switch without issues.
You should not need a route at all. The existance of a rout indicates the that one of the units is probably set untagged and is only allowing VLAN 1. This may also be why general mode was failing. I would also avoid VLAN 1 at all costs.
